Colic – and new parents shudder

My daughter is colic. I discovered that word from the Bible for new parents – “What to Expect in the FIrst year”.

This means that almost everyday she cries for no known reason for an hour or more. Reasons for colic are not certain – causes could be gas, over excitement, stress.. I think my daughter is colic because of gas. She writhes and stretches out her body as though in spasms – and cries continously. No amount of comforting helps. I spoke to docs and consulted books – it seems one just has to live with it. Meanwhile, one can try putting the baby on her tummy and things like that to relieve the gas. Has not helped my baby though.

I’m hoping she will be okay once she gets older. One thing I have experienced as a new mom – one gets used to all kinds of things, including a howling baby. Yes, I still want to tear my hair out on certain days, and cry myself when I see and feel my baby being in pain, but those days are not very frequent nowadays.

Meanwhile, I wonder whether tonight will be a quiet one?

    Hi Notun Ma,

My son who is 3 now was severely colic when he was about a month old gave us many stressful days and nights until we hit upon swaddling him very tight which while he would protest with all his might and seemed a bit cruel at the time seemed to work like magic in quieting him down or atleast gave me some peace when it was dearly needed.

But, she will get better by and by and one day it will magically disappear…just when you think you cannot deal with it one day more.

    Hi Notun,
Happened to see ur blog. Hardly any time to read posts now or post. Just had my second child – she is 7 days old today. Am hoping and praying she won’t be colicky. But I heard if the mom (if you are breast feeding) has fennel seeds it reduces colic for the baby. Worth a try. Simple enough and you lost nothing. Also prop the baby in a car seat for night time sleep. That also helps.

Have you tried rubbing heeng (aesofetida) after diluting it in bit of water nad rubbing around your baby’s navel? I’ve heard it helps. Worked a few times for my son.

Valium, Calmpose, Lunesta … pop any of these in before she starts crying and you’ll sleep right thru her wails 🙂

Wow! I actually found a blogger from Guwahati! Reading what you wrote about Faasi Bazaar and the picture of your Ma in a white sador brought a wave of nostalgia. Greetings!
